On February 18, 1993, World Savings & Loan Association and its parent company, Golden West Financial Corporation, announced its purchase of land at the intersection of the Westside Expressway and Loop 1604 for their new National Operations Center. World Savings and Loan, with assets of $45 billion, as of March 31, 2000, currently operating 372 offices in 27 states, is the third largest multi-state thrift in the country. Mario Hernandez, President, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, said, "World Savings has the potential to be the single largest project the Foundation has located in our city." At that time, World Savings also announced that they were donating one-half of their 223.8 acres of land to the Alamo Community College District for the new Northwest Vista College Campus. On November 14, 1994 World Savings, celebrated its Grand Opening and began full operation at their new Westover Hills "campus" facility. World Savings is just
completing the addition of another 93,000 square foot, two-story building
to their existing five building campus, which brings it to a total of
353,000 square feet on their 110 acre Westover Hills office campus. The
new building will provide enough office space for 470 additional employees.
The planned office building is being built a year ahead of schedule due
to the rapid growth in their home mortgage loan business, and is being
modeled after the campus' existing office buildings. According to Gary
Bradley, executive vice-president at World Savings, "We have ample space
to build and, over the next 10 years or so, may build several more buildings
on the site." "We have an overall campus planned that would allow us to
build three or four more buildings," Bradley says. |
