A major factor in Philips Semiconductors' choice (formerly VLSI Technology) of Westover Hills for their "campus style" high-tech facility was its proximity to San Antonio's large population base and our "unified high-tech" infrastructure. Philips Semiconductors is a subsidiary of Royal Philips Electronics, one of the world's biggest electronics companies and Europe's largest. Philips is a global leader, in more than 60 countries, in the areas of lighting, consumer electronics, domestic appliances, components, semiconductors, medical systems, and IT services (Origin). Philips' (VLSI) selection of the Westover Hills development is best described in an article, "High-Tech Scientific Site Selection", that was featured in the September, 1987, edition of Area Development Sites and Facility Planning magazine. The article refers to VLSI Technology's Site Selection Team, headed by Perry Denning, which did an in-depth comparison of Phoenix, Albuquerque, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio, before choosing San Antonio and Westover Hills for their new Wafer Manufacturing Facility site. Philips Semiconductors
has completed their third phase expansion. This $300,000,000 expansion
will increase their total San Antonio investment to more than $750,000,000.
Philips has completed construction of a new Administration Building, also
on their 126 acre Westover Hills Campus. Philips has built approximately
400,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space. |
