MARTIN WENDER
Charles Martin Wender (known to most as "Marty") is well known for his
achievements and vision. Marty Wender, a Fort Worth native, began his
San Antonio business career in 1969, upon graduating from the Business
Honors Program at The University of Texas at Austin and marrying San Antonio
native Rene Lynn Mandel.
Charles Martin Wender's
business real estate development projects in San Antonio include Westover
Hills in the northwest area, Fawn Meadow in the Medical Center, Crownridge
at IH 10 West and Camp Bullis Road, and Oak Run in New Braunfels.
Marty Wender's visions
of a revitalization of the City's west side have come to fruition in his
Westover Hills development. Marty Wender was selected as one of five "Visionaries"
by the San Antonio Business Journal special section entitled "A Century
of Business" for his vision and accomplishments in West San Antonio and
his Westover Hills Development. Westover Hills has become home to Sea
World of Texas, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort Hotel and Arthur
Hill Championship Golf Course, QVC Network, Inc., Philips Semiconductors
(formerly VLSI Technology, Inc.), World Savings National Operations Center,
the Alamo Community College District's new Northwest Vista Campus, which
opened Phase I in October of 1998, Oberthur Gaming Technologies, Rudy's
Country Store & Bar-B-Q, and the 88.5 acre Office Campus for The American
Funds Group/Capital Group Companies, which opened in the fall of 1998.
Marty's efforts contributed
greatly in securing approval, in only 90 days, for the Stotzer Freeway
(State Highway 151), which runs through the Westover Hills development.
These efforts have ushered in a new era of public/private cooperation
that has served as a model for other projects in the state and nation.
Marty developed the
concept, arranged financing, and put together the team to build the Hyatt
Hill Country Resort and 18 hole Championship Golf Course in the heart
of his Westover Hills Development, Texas's first true Destination Resort
Hotel.
Marty Wender is active
in numerous civic and charitable organizations in the community and is
currently Vice Chairman of the Board of the Greater San Antonio Chamber
of Commerce and was the 1998 Chairman of the Chamber's Northwest Business
Area Council. He has also served on the Boards of the Greater San Antonio
and North San Antonio Chambers, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation,
Texas Research Park, San Antonio Medical Foundation, and the Jewish Federation
of San Antonio. He is also on the University of Texas at San Antonio and
The University of Texas Health Science Center Development Boards and served
as Chairman of the Corporate Circle Council of the Southwest Foundation
for Biomedical Research.
Marty Wender has been
the recipient of many awards and recognition because of his achievements
and his devotion and service to the community, including his selection
by Real Estate Times magazine as one of the "Top 100 Developers" in the
nation for 1988 and his appointment by Governor Mark White to serve on
the Texas Economic Development Commission. Marty's energy and dedication
to excellence extend to all of his activities. His willingness to try
the untried and his insistence on quality are his hallmarks.
